The Sacred Coffee Alternative
We build so many rituals around our love of coffee, life without it just doesn’t seem liveable. The reality is it could be a whole lot better if we tried reducing our caffeine intake.
We’re crazy about cacao for so many reasons and one of them is that it makes the most delicious alternative to caffeine based beverages, such as coffee. Cultures across the world will start their day with freshly ground coffee beans, but why has the high intake of a stress-inducing chemical been so normalised?
Now don't get me wrong - I love coffee! But I don't love the anxious rush that comes with drinking it too many days in a row. Sure, it makes you think faster - but better? Hmm, I'm not so sure. The truth is that caffeine is a highly addictive substance, and largely contributes to high levels of stress and anxiety, so why not consider a healthy alternative?
This suggestion is generally met with a look of dismay. Quit coffee? Not possible. We build so many rituals around our love of coffee, life without it just doesn’t seem liveable. The reality is it could be a whole lot better if we tried reducing our caffeine intake. And if I can quit my caffeine addiction, that’s proof that anybody can.
Here are five simple rules to follow:
- Start slow. Instead of saying you’ll never have coffee again, try not having it for a week, or even a weekend. Order a chai instead, they're delicious!
- Remind yourself that less coffee means less anxiety.
- Create an even better ritual than rushing to buy that latte before work. Take the time to really sit and enjoy your cacao, tasting it, smelling it and having a moment to yourself.
